Lincoln and the Reconstruction Congress placed the principles of the nation’s founding document into the Constitution itself, and attempted to codify these broad precepts into laws. These Amendments fundamentally changed the Constitution as it then existed. But how have these principles been interpreted and sustained in the years since Reconstruction? And how are they being upheld or dismissed today?
