Sven Beckert’s Capitalism: A Global History is a critical read for understandingthe historical development of capitalism. At over 13,00 pages, however, it can be intimidating. These links can give you a bit of a summary of the work.
Perhaps the best place to start is to listen to an interview with the author. The following are good stating places.
A good short introduction is this interview, less than 30 minutes long, in which he sets out the main themes of the book.
A more detailed interview of about an hour is here–probably the best interview of this nature.
There are several articles reviewing this book as well.
The Long Revolution, from The Nation
How Capitalism Took over the World, by the NY Times
Finally, there are several more interviews in which Beckert is somewhat challenged by his interviewers. So, these are the “deeper cuts” you may which to pursue.
Yascha Mounk, The Good Fight
Josh Szeps, Uncomfortable Conversaations
If you wish to order a copy of the book to read, I suggest a version like Kindle, which can be found here.
