Coming Up: The Geopolitics of Lewis and Clark

The story of the Lewis and Clark expedition is primarily focused on the day to day events that the two leaders recorded in their journals.  But by focusing so closely on the explorers’ viewpoints, we miss the fact that the expedition actually part of a decades-long rivalry between several nations for control of the Pacific Northwest.  Spain, Britain, Russia, and France all played important roles, as well as several Native American tribes—especially the Sioux, Mandan, Blackfeet, and Chinook.  Imperial maneuvering was also complicated by western pioneers encroaching on the area, often with their own schemes and power plays.

This presentation Will set the Lewis and Clark trek in its geopolitical context.  Rather than detract from the expedition’s direct encounters, the broader stage reveals an even more dramatic and significant story.

Presentation: February 28, 2026, 1:30 pm, Northwest Place.
